Homemade Hot Chocolate

A Few Words…

There’s nothing like a cup of hot chocolate to warm you up on a wintery day!

Although I do have some store bought packages of hot chocolate, I prefer making my own.  Homemade is easy to make and it’s made without as much sugar, preservatives or a long list of ingredients that are in packaged mixes!

You can also swap the milk if you are trying to use less dairy or are lactose intolerant.  Try it with unsweetened vanilla almond milk, or any of your favorite non-dairy alternatives.

And what’s hot chocolate without a few marshmallows on top?

Makes 2 mugs

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of milk (or favorite non-dairy milk)
  • 4 tbs. unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3-4 tbs. sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
  • a pinch of salt
  • 1 cinnamon stick

Directions:
In a medium pot, whisk together the milk, unsweetened cocoa power, sugar and a pinch of salt over medium low heat. Add a cinnamon stick to the hot chocolate.

Do not bring to a boil (or it will burn!) The hot chocolate will foam a bit and have tiny bubbles when ready - about about 10-15 minutes.

Pour into mugs and top with a few marshmallows!
