Eat Cake for Breakfast!

My daughter Tamara bought me this beautiful mug for Mother’s Day a few years ago. It always makes me laugh and brings a smile to my face as I reminisce when my kids were young, and yes, sometimes (more often than not!) we did have cake for breakfast!

How times have changed. My family’s breakfasts have evolved. Tamara has a toasted english muffin with some cream cheese, Jarred has his bread topped with Skippy peanut butter and a banana and Mark alternates the toppings on his bread between peanut butter and Nutella (sometimes both!) and with a banana too. Even my husband changed his Tim Horton’s order to whole wheat toast with no butter and a peanut butter on the side! I have a few favorite breakfasts that I alternate: oatmeal or steel cut oats, healthy flax/ seed bread with either avocado/ hard boiled egg or nut butter or Multigrain cereal with unsweetened vanilla almond milk!

But it wasn’t always like this and to be honest, breakfast changed when I started to take an interest in leading a more mindful lifestyle and having healthier options always available. Changes didn’t happen because I insisted! My family’s breakfast choices reminds me of a quote from the movie ‘Field of Dreams’, “if you build it, he will come.” Have fresh fruit, different whole grain bread options, eggs, cheese and hot and cold cereals available and new habits will follow.

Slow and steady and with patience. One habit at a time. Build it and they will come 🙂

And occasionally we still have cake for breakfast.

As always, I’d love to hear from you!
