Apple Crisp

A Few Words…

I had an abundance of apples and wanted to make a dessert for my family. Something not too sweet, not too tart and I came up with a healthier version of an apple crisp!

This is a great dessert for a summer BBQ!

Perfect warmed up as is, or with a dollop of your favourite ice cream or frozen yogurt!

Serves 8-10

Ingredients:

  • 1-2 tbs. soft butter to grease the baking dish

Filling:

  • 6 medium sized tart apples, peeled, cored and cut into slices ( I used Granny Smith, Honey Crisp and Pink Lady apples)
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup white flour

Topping:

  • 3/4 cup all purpose flour (I combined whole wheat with the all purpose flour)
  • 1/2 cup large old fashioned rolled oats
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 4 tbs. cold butter cut into cubes

Directions:
Preheat oven to 375°F. Grease the bottom and sides of a medium rectangular baking dish with sides. I used the Corning Ware rectangular French White baking dish. It's approximately 13 x 9 inches.

In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced apples along with the sugar and flour and mix until all combined. Place into the greased baking dish.

In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, cinnamon and salt. Add the butter and cut into the mixture with a fork or pastry cutter until crumbly.

Sprinkle the topping over the apple filling and bake uncovered for 35-40 minutes until the topping is golden brown.

You can make this ahead of time and reheat it in the oven for about 20-30 minutes.

Spoon into individual plates and top with vanilla ice cream or frozen yogurt if desired.
