My Top 8 Tips for Surviving Holiday Meals!

Holiday anticipation makes many of us anxious. Party plans, big dinners, family drama (sometimes!), who to invite, what to serve, will there be enough, food temptations, indulgences that make us feel guilty – it could drive you crazy!

There’s so much food over the holidays! Have you ever gotten mad at yourself because you ate so much and felt that you’ll never ever be able to get a handle on how not to over eat during the holidays?? What if you had, what I like to call a game plan, where you could change the way you think about things and adjust a few of your habits, just a little bit, in order to feel great about the holidays and not feel like you’ve ‘caved in’ and had no control?

I can help you with that!

Here are some strategies and tips that you can try:
#1. Eat during the day! Don’t skip meals! Focus on sticking with whole foods – fruits, vegetables, proteins and healthy fats. You will have more energy and will feel better and not starving when going to your celebration.
#2. Have a snack an hour or two before you go – not something processed or loaded with sugar either. Some yogurt or a handful of nuts, a hard boiled egg, vegetable soup – I think you’re getting the picture!
#3. It’s not about saying ‘NO’ to alcohol, favorite yummy foods and desserts. Put healthier options on your plate first, then a smaller portion of your ‘favorites’. Stay hydrated with water and if you have anything alcoholic, just watch your intake!
#4. If you have a sweet tooth, like I do, look at what desserts are on the table. Decide which you really would like and opt for one or two different cakes/pastries but take a smaller portion and put fruit on your plate as well. Another thing – don’t eat while standing at the dessert table and eyeing all the goodies! One little morsel leads to another and another and another. Put your choices on your plate, move away from the table, sit down with others and enjoy!
#5. Exercise during the day! It’s not only beneficial for your body, but for your mind too!
#6. Get rid of the guilt!!! You are not on a diet!!! Live by the 80/20 rule – 80% of the time eat mindfully, the 20% leaves room for indulgences – life is about balance and not about deprivation!
#7. Don’t even say to yourself ‘Well…I won’t eat tomorrow!’ You can eat anything and if you justify it by saying that you won’t eat tomorrow, what message are you telling yourself??? Every time that I said those words to myself, I swear, I ate more. The next day, just go back to a breakfast of cereal, yogurt with fruit, toast with peanut butter or whatever your favorite healthy breakfast is, and you will see, the day will just follow with better choices☺ You’ll be back on track before you know it.
#8. Relax, have fun and enjoy yourself!

Holidays are a festive, joyful time to celebrate with friends and family and that’s the plan for this year!! Enjoy everyone! Happy Chanukah and Merry Christmas!!

As always, I would love to hear from you! How do you cope with holiday abundance of food?
